Before You Paint: The 15-Minute Wall Inspection
A quick pre-paint checklist can save hours of touch-ups later.
Paint is great at changing color, but terrible at hiding damage. Before opening the can, spend 15 minutes checking the walls with this simple routine.
Turn on the truth light
Hold a bright work light close to the wall and aim it sideways. Mark dents, ridges, nail pops, and bad patches with painter’s tape.
Check corners and seams
Look for loose tape, hairline cracks, and movement around doors, windows, and ceiling transitions.
Fill the tiny nail holes
Now is a great time to go around and fill all those tiny nail holes you have everywhere. It is really simple: dab a little putty into the hole, then use a rag to wipe it flush and smooth. Do not leave any putty extending beyond the hole. It is not necessary for nail holes, and it will stand out like a shiny silver dollar after paint.
Find contamination
Grease, dust, smoke residue, handprints, and cleaning products can interfere with adhesion. Clean suspect areas first.
Inspect old caulk
Pull away loose or cracked caulk. Don’t smear new caulk over material that has already failed.
Test questionable paint
If the old finish is glossy, chalky, peeling, or unknown, clean it and scuff or prime as appropriate before recoating.
Finish with your hands
Run your palm lightly over repaired areas. Your hand often catches ridges your eyes miss.
